Phototherapy For Depression

Abnormalities in brain functions that normally cycle with changes in daylight exposure, may respond to bright light treatment. Light therapy, in a strength of 10,000 lux (the equivalent of bright sunlight) for 20-30 minutes each morning, may be very effective in alleviating depression, anxiety, fatigue, and sleep disorders, especially during certain periods of the year, like winter, when days are shorter, and less sunlight is available. Light devices include, light visors, light glasses, light lamps, light boxes, and dawn dusk simulators. Dr. Taylor can inform you where to purchase quality devices, and instruct you on how to use them in your home, work environment or dorm room. Similar devices may also be effective in helping you to more quickly recover from the effects of jet lag. Of course, the ideal source of light treatment is in the morning on a sunny day, and ideally on a sunny day after a snowfall, which helps to reflect bright light into your eyes. New evidence also suggests that safe outdoor light exposure to the skin, may have antidepressant effects.
