Signs and Symptoms of Addiction
Abuse – The use of any drug or involvement in any behavior in a disapproved manner and causes negative consequences
Addiction – A pattern of drug use or behavior in a compulsive manner, with ongoing efforts made to obtain the drug or continue the behavior
Compulsivity – A repetitive behavior that has no obvious positive value to the person
Craving – Intense wanting of a drug or behavior when it is absent or unavailable
Cross-tolerance and Cross-dependence – The capacity of one drug or behavior to suppress withdrawal symptoms from another drug or behavior
Dependence – A physical state produced by ongoing use of a drug or involvement in a behavior that results in withdrawal when they are abruptly discontinued
Habit – A response caused by a trigger in the surroundings, regardless of concern about the negative consequences
Impulsivity – A tendency of a rapid, unplanned response to a situation without regard for the negative consequences that may follow
Rebound – A greatly intensified return of the original symptoms after discontuining an original effective treatment
Reinforcement – The tendency of a drug or behavior that causes pleasure to lead to repeated use of the drug or involvement in the behavior
Relapse – The return of the original condition after stopping an effective treatment or healthy behavior
Tolerance – A condition that occurs after repeated use of a drug or involvement in a behavior, and involves an increase of the dose of the drug or behavior to get the original effect
Withdrawal – The physical reaction when a dependency-producing drug or behavior is suddenly discontinued
